This weeks theme over at Written Inc is - Distant
I took this shot at a local wildlife park, I am not a fan of caged animals and this trip reminded me of why, these animals did NOT look happy. The monkeys looked bored, the snakes looked like they were dead, the giraffes looked out of place, the Elephants just paced around in circles and these Magnificent Gorillas looked 'Distant'
It was so sad Sharron and I were almost in tears, OK so the zoo might be saving endangered species and stuff but these animals did not look happy at all. I don't know what the answer is and I am no animal rights activist but can they not see the sadness in their eyes? Talk about distant the sign said their habitat was dense forest and there were no trees to be seen. These guys were thousands of miles from home.......

Strangely, animals live longer in captivity, due to better medical treatment etc, but whether that means they are better off is a rather doubtful proposition.
I agree, zoos always make me feel sad.
I do take my kids on occasion, because I feel it's important for them to see that these are real animals worthy of respect and protection (since we're not embarking on any safaris any time soon) but it's always very melancholy.
It is sad that it seems the only way to preserve many species. But modern zoos do give the animals a much better existence than those we saw as children.
I do like your picture very much.
I agree with what you said. The gorilla does looks sad. Nice framing of the leaves on his features. :)
You're right about the sadness in the eyes of the animals in capitivity. I love to take photos of animals, but aside from going on safari (uh uh, not me!) it will be a rare shot to see the wildness in their eyes. This is a great shot though. A picture can say a thousand words or leave one speechless. That's why we do what we do!
Very nice capture of this sad gorilla.
Agreed animals in the zoos are from distant lands and their eyes express the unhappiness. Great post!
